We're not able to focus on the present moment because we're always so caught up overthinking everything that's going to happen in the next day, the next week, or even the next month and year. But we can control our thoughts and help ourselves calm our minds by being more mindful throughout our day. Mindfulness has gained a lot of attention in the past few years on social media, magazines, and wellness shows but what does mindfulness even mean? Being mindful is the act of focusing on the present moment by bringing your attention to your emotions, feelings, actions, and mental state in that moment. You can be mindful of anything you do. For example, try taking a moment to feel the textures and taste the flavors of the food you're eating. Is it crunchy, smooth, grainy, or creamy? Does it remind you of anything? When you become mindful of the actions you do on a daily basis, you'll start to notice a change in the overall quality of your life. Taking time to fully experience what you're doing by processing your body and mind's emotions and actions will help you slow down and enjoy whatever you're doing. You'll begin to appreciate the little things in life like doing your skin care routine, making breakfast, driving, and even simply sitting still without being on your phone.

You rarely see anyone sitting without having their eyes glued to their phones, unconciously scrolling through an endless newsfeed of other people's lives, or more accurately, other people's picture perfect moments. It's normal to love to check your friends new pictures and videos on social media, but when it takes up hours and hours of your preciouis time it's definitely a problem. In times when you're alone, like in the car waiting for someone, don't always feel the need to reach for your phone. You can do nothing. Yes, do nothing. Sit still and just breath for a few minutes, appreciating the accomplishments you did today. When you put your full effort (body) and attention (mind) to only what you're doing in that moment you'll feel much more relaxed and calm after each task. When you eat, focus on eating. When you shower, enjoy the flowing water and scents of the shampoo, instead of freaking out about all the errands you have to run after the shower. When I began to meditate and practice mindfulness, I noticed a change in my mood and overall energy level towards the end of the day. I wasn't as burnt out as other days.

So forgive yourself for all the times you overwhelmed yourself by catastrophzing or overthinking for hours and days. Be compassionate with yourself and overtime with practice and consistency you'll automatically become more postive in your thougths by saying no to endless overthinking. I still have many many times where I overthink and get overwhelmed but I try my best to convince myself what's meant to happen will be no matter how much I worry. What's mine is mine and what's not mine is not mine in the future. It's already written. So instead of worrying about what's gonna happen because you feel uncertain, trust your destiny and live in the moment. Don't be afraid of what's coming. Be excited for having a whole new day to live your life the way you want to. Even if you experience some unpleasant times, accept it and know that every struggle, every panic attack, and every painful moment has engraved a unique pattern into your soul that shapes the way you live and think. And you’re always changing. So change for the better.

And remember, live beautifully and happily.

Warmly,

N.A.S.
